INSIDE OUT
These days carve me
like a balsa wood block
with a brand new set of tools
in a hard wood box
presented to a boy

who knows nothing of sculpting.

He has orders to produce an image
from the outside in
rather than the inside out
not to grow
but diminish
from that which has symmetry
to that which has none

beginning balanced
and then made imperfect
the opposite of birth.

For that he admires
those who can achieve
and feels assured
that he can not

yet still makes
his first move
which is also
his first mistake.

These days
surrounded by splinters
he sits no closer
to a finished work
and feels more content
than he has ever felt.
